🧬 Culture & Traditions
Among the many age-old cultural practices and traditions of the Santal community—spanning thousands of years—the image above illustrates one such custom: whenever any relative, well-wisher, or benefactor visits our home, a woman of the household welcomes them by placing a *ghoti* (a small vessel made of Bronz) filled with water before them after they have been seated.
🎉 Festivals
Santal festivals are an important part of Santal culture, closely connected to nature, agriculture, and community life. Major festivals like Sohrai, Baha, and Magh Sim celebrate harvest, flowers, and seasonal changes. These occasions are filled with traditional music, dance, rituals, and feasting. They reflect the Santals’ deep respect for nature and strong sense of unity and joy within the community.
🎶 Music & Dance
Music and dance are the heart of Santal culture, expressing joy, unity, and tradition. During festivals and special occasions, Santals perform group dances in rhythmic patterns, often in lines or circles. Traditional instruments like drums (Tamak, Tumdak) and flutes create lively beats that guide the dancers. These performances are not just entertainment—they reflect their connection to nature, community, and cultural identity.
🍛 Lifestyle & Food
The Santal lifestyle is simple, nature-centered, and deeply connected to community living. Most Santals depend on agriculture, forest resources, and traditional practices for their daily life. Their food is natural and nutritious, with rice as the staple, along with vegetables, fish, and meat. A popular traditional drink is Handia (rice beer), often shared during festivals and gatherings. Their lifestyle reflects harmony with nature, simplicity, and strong social bonds.
